There's something special about getting married when the whole world is already in a celebrating mood. Families are together, the evenings are long and warm, and on New Year's Eve you may even have fireworks to end the night. A festive-season wedding can be truly magical, with a little extra planning.
Choosing your date
Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year's Day are public holidays, and many venues and suppliers charge a surcharge or close altogether. The days in between are often easier to book and kinder on your budget. New Year's Eve is hugely popular, so book your venue and wedding celebrant early.
Plan for the summer heat
December in Brisbane and on the Gold Coast means heat, humidity and afternoon storms. A late-afternoon ceremony, around two hours before sunset, gives you softer light and cooler temperatures. Make sure your venue has a genuine wet-weather option, offer guests shade and water, and keep the ceremony comfortably short. Our guide to weatherproofing your outdoor wedding has more ideas.
For an evening New Year's Eve celebration, an early-evening ceremony followed by a long dinner and dancing to midnight works beautifully. Check your venue's finish time first, since not every venue can stay open past midnight.
Think about your guests
Guests may have family commitments, holiday travel or higher flight and accommodation costs. Send save-the-dates early, ideally 9 to 12 months ahead, and share accommodation options so people can plan.
Keeping the budget merry
Festive dates can cost more, but they can also save you money. Many venues are already decorated for Christmas, which reduces styling costs, and guests are often in a generous, celebratory mood. Ask venues whether they offer packages for the quieter days between Christmas and New Year, and build any public holiday surcharges into your budget from the start so they never come as a surprise.
Festive touches that feel like you
- A ceremony reading that reflects the season of giving and togetherness.
- Christmas lights or lanterns for an evening reception.
- A countdown to midnight led by your MC on New Year's Eve.
- Seasonal flowers and fresh summer flavours on the menu.
Booking suppliers in peak season
December is one of the busiest months for weddings in Brisbane and on the Gold Coast, and many suppliers book out well ahead. Lock in your key people early, confirm their holiday arrangements, and ask whether any public holiday or peak-season rates apply. It's also worth confirming delivery and pick-up times for hire items, since many businesses close between Christmas and the New Year.
Don't forget the paperwork
Your Notice of Intended Marriage must be lodged with your celebrant at least one month before your wedding, and offices and suppliers slow down over the holidays, so leave plenty of time.
