Something to Wag About: How to Include Your Pet in Your Wedding Ceremony

There's something undeniably magical about sharing your most important moments with every member of your family, and for so many of us, that includes the four-legged ones. Whether it's your golden retriever with a flower crown or your tabby cat carried down the aisle in someone's arms, incorporating your pet into your wedding ceremony is one of the most heart-warming things you can do on your big day. As your wedding celebrant, Let's Marry absolutely loves helping couples weave their furry (and occasionally feathered) friends into their ceremony in a way that feels meaningful, joyful, and just a little bit adorable.

If you've been dreaming of having your dog walk you down the aisle, or you want your cat to photobomb the ring exchange, read on. Here are our favourite tips for making it happen beautifully.

Why Pets Belong at Your Wedding

Your pet has been there through the late nights, the lazy Sunday mornings, and every season of your relationship. For couples who are deeply bonded to their animals, it only makes sense that they're included in the wedding ceremony. Beyond the pure cuteness factor, having your pet present adds a layer of authenticity and warmth to your celebration that no floral arrangement can replicate.

We've had the privilege of celebrating weddings across Brisbane and the Gold Coast, from private backyard ceremonies in Toowong and Auchenflower to outdoor garden weddings in New Farm, Newstead, and Teneriffe. And yes, we've seen some very well-dressed dogs steal the show at more than a few of them.

Choose the Right Role for Your Pet

Not every pet is cut out for a starring role, and that's perfectly okay. Think carefully about your pet's temperament and what they'll genuinely enjoy (or at least tolerate graciously).

Some popular roles for pets at weddings include:

Ring bearer: Attach a small ring pouch or basket to your dog's collar and have them walk down the aisle escorted by a trusted friend or family member. This works beautifully for calm, well-trained dogs.

Flower girl or boy: A dog wearing a floral wreath or bowtie, scattering petals? Yes, please. This works wonderfully for enthusiastic, sociable breeds.

Aisle escort: Have your pet walk beside you as you make your way to the altar. This is especially popular for couples having a wedding at home or in a private outdoor setting.

Honorary guest: Sometimes the best role for an anxious or elderly pet is simply to be present and comfortable, seated near a trusted person in the front row.

Wedding photo companion: If your pet isn't suited to the ceremony itself, consider including them in your pre-ceremony portraits. You'll treasure those photos forever.

Tips for a Safe and Stress-Free Experience

The wellbeing of your pet comes first, always. Here's how to make sure they feel safe and happy on the day.

Do a rehearsal. Bring your pet to the venue beforehand so they can familiarise themselves with the space, the smells, and the sounds. If you're having a wedding ceremony in a location they've never visited, this is especially important.

Assign a dedicated pet handler. This is your pet's person for the day. Someone who knows your animal well, isn't in the wedding party, and whose only job is to keep your pet calm, comfortable, and out of trouble. This could be a close friend or family member.

Check venue rules and weather. Before you commit to including your pet, confirm that your venue permits animals. Many outdoor venues across Brisbane suburbs like Mount Gravatt, Carindale, Sunnybank, and Eight Mile Plains are pet-friendly, as are many private properties in Loganholme, Rochedale, and further south toward Coomera, Upper Coomera, and Helensvale on the Gold Coast. Hot Queensland days, however, can be tough on animals, so always have shade, fresh water, and a cool retreat nearby.

Plan an exit strategy. Once your pet has had their moment in the spotlight, have your handler quietly remove them to a comfortable, quiet space. Long receptions and large crowds can be overwhelming for animals, and they'll be much happier having a rest than being passed from guest to guest.

Keep their routine as normal as possible. Feed them at their usual time, walk them before the ceremony, and avoid introducing new foods or treats that might upset their tummy on the big day.

What to Do If Your Venue Doesn't Allow Pets

Not all venues are pet-friendly, and that's completely understandable. But don't lose heart. There are still beautiful ways to honour your fur baby on your wedding day.

Consider a private wedding, legals only ceremony, or a wedding at home where the rules are entirely yours to set. A legals only wedding in Brisbane or on the Gold Coast is a wonderfully intimate option that allows you to keep things small, personal, and entirely on your terms. You can always celebrate with a bigger party later, but the legal ceremony itself can be a quiet, meaningful moment shared with your closest people, and your pet.

A registered marriage can take place in your own backyard, at a favourite park, or in any meaningful outdoor location. As long as your celebrant at a wedding is legally authorised and the correct paperwork is in place, the where is largely up to you.

Personalising Your Ceremony to Include Your Pet

As your marriage celebrant, Let's Marry loves working with couples to write ceremonies that feel genuinely personal. That includes acknowledging your pets as part of your family story.

You might like to:

Mention your pet by name in your vows or in the ceremony script. A simple, heartfelt line like "and to our dog Charlie, who taught us patience and unconditional love" can bring the entire room to tears (the happy kind).

Include a unity ritual that involves your pet, such as planting a pet-friendly garden together, or a family blessing that names your animals.

Feature your pet in your ceremony signage or order of service, perhaps with a cheeky note like "Ring Security" next to their photo.

These kinds of personal touches are what make a wedding ceremony truly unforgettable, and they're exactly the kind of thing we love helping couples create.
